| Labor Dispute Cases on the Rise in China |

This represents a 98% increase over 2007. Approximately a quarter of the cases in 2008 were settled in court, representing a 93% increase over the previous year. In the first quarter of 2009, the number of labor dispute cases continued to increase rapidly. There have already been close to 100,000 labor dispute cases settled this year, almost 2/3 more than during the same period last year. Several factors are driving the sudden increase in labor dispute cases. The past year’s economic downturn has driven many companies into bankruptcy, preventing them from paying workers their full wages. Furthermore, as companies try desperately to cut costs, they sometimes overlook regulations governing wages, overtime hours, and safe working conditions. LINK TO FULL ARTICLE |
